Bright Bikes

Such a simple, elegant idea: make abandoned rusted bikes into public furniture by spraypainting them and planting flowers in the baskets. That's exactly what Caroline Macfarlane and Vanessa Nicholas did and they called it The Good Bike Project. Would be a nice project to do here in Utrecht, where bike wrecks are a dime a dozen...

Nuclear Danger?

Luzinterruptus (Latin for 'interrupted light') is a Spanish art collective that makes eerily beautiful light installations. For their most recent work 'Under nuclear threat' they made an army of scarecrow-like nuclear figures. Their ghostly appearance, a threatening death march upon their surroundings, appeals to the modern fear of what events such as occurred in Japan might do to our world.

David A Smith is a name that has become synonymous in Sign-Writing and Glass gilding circles, with high quality, hand crafted reverse glass signs and decorative silvered and gilded mirrors.

In this short documentary, we reveal behind the scenes work, techniques and visions that Dave uses when carrying out his passion as a glass embosser - One of the few remaining traditional UK glass artists.

Revolights is a project featured on Kickstarter.com. (Kickstarter is the largest funding platform for creative projects in the world.) Revolights is an amazing and  innovative bike light solution.

So what is it? Revolights consist of 2 thin profile LED rings (white in front, red in back) that mount directly to each wheel rim (just below the brake calipers) using a series of rim specific clips. In other words, your wheels will become your bike lighting! As the images clearly show.

Datatorial – All the Data That's Fit to Print

As a follow up on my post from last saturday I hereby present you a event organized by onlab.Wish I was in Berlin.

In the context of our Summer School we will hold a public conference at HBC in Berlin with the two designers and experts Francesco Franchi and Stefan Fichtel. The Italian and German guest speakers will present their work and discuss with Nicolas Bourquin and Thibaud Tissot in a cross-disciplinary panel.

After the commercial success of the world acclaimed and (at the same time) highly criticised books Data Flow, onlab would like to invite the public to discuss and expand the definition of contemporary information graphics in the field of Editorial Design.

Alexander McQueen's finest works

This exhibition titled 'Savage Beauty' at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York just closed, and how I wished NYC was closer by so I could have seen it. Late Mr McQueen's famous creature-like clothing is visually stunning, technologically superb and conceptually sound. If you're familiar with his work (and you probably are), there's probably nothing explicitly new to see here, but it's still awesome eyecandy.

Also, do you remember that projection of Kate Moss on the catwalk?

Tijd:

Locatie: Showroom Arnhem, zijde Kleine Oord
Plaats: Arnhem

Locatie Showroom Arnhem, Langstraat 20, ingang Kleine Oord

-
7 september 16.00 uur: lezing door de van oorsprong Koreaanse kunstenaar Lee Eun Young.
De lezing wordt afgesloten met een rondleiding over de tentoonstelling.
Locatie Showroom Arnhem, Langstraat 20, ingang Kleine Oord

Mirror Lab 2.0

The idea of exploring the mirror for the installation has grown from the desire to capture, explore and experiment with the landscape, rather than the built form. The project itself is not important on it's not, as much as is its relationship with the site. the mirrorlab is merely a tool to explore and capture the views of the existing and by doing so it becomes invisible, completely dissolving into the landscape. A simple insertion into the bridge, solely supported by the two points, mirrorlab adds a new dimension to the site, both inside the arc by doubling and inverting the space, and outside by capturing and framing the views. Pivoting through the centre, the door allows the visitors to interact with and become part of the installation, immersing themselves into and exploring both the real and the reflected landscapes.

The most recent usual unusual stuff from Banksy. Witty, funny, but at the same time sharp-tongued and sarcastic. One piece was posted next to a Bristol highway, until it was taken down by cops of the UK Highways Agency - who assure the BBC it wasn't because they felt ridiculed by the Banksy sign. Check out the BBC article about it here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-14574419

Banksy has also been featured on 'Street Summer', an initiative by UK TV Channel 4 to offer a space on air for urban artists to make unmediated short pieces for the screen. A  compilation of his ad breaks you can see in the video above.

Wim Crouwel Exhibition + Lecture at Stedelijk Museum!

From the 13th of August in Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam: Wim Crouwel, A Graphic Odyssey

Regarded as one of the leading designers of the twentieth century, Crouwel embraced a new modernity to produce typographic designs that captured the essence of the emerging computer and space age of the early 1960s.

Spanning over 60 years, the exhibition covered Crouwel’s rigorous design approach and key moments in his career including his work for design practice Total Design, the identity for the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, as well as his iconic poster, print, typography and lesser known exhibition design. The exhibition explored Crouwel’s innovative use of grid-based layouts and typographic systems to produce consistently striking asymmetric visuals.

Not only for graphic designers, I think this exhibition will be really worth checking out!

Also, on the 1st of September there's an Items Live lecture where designers as Experimental Jetset, Na Kim, Hugues Boekraad and Thonik discuss Crouwel's work and influence. And then the next day go see Crouwel himself at Now We Are Talking festival in The Hague.

Fear not, bookworms and library rats. Two fellow bibliophiles, novelist (The Name of the Rose) and critic Umberto Eco, and playwright and screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere, have collaborated on a volume whose title says it all: This is Not the End of the Book: A Conversation Curated by Jean-Philippe de Tonnac.

Read about it over here (very very interesting!)

Quote Umberto Eco:
“The Internet has returned us to the alphabet … From now on, everyone has to read. In order to read, you need a medium. This medium cannot simply be a computer screen.”

DIENACHT magazine

DIENACHT
A magazine about photography, design and subculture is made twice a year by one-man, Calin Kruse.

When I unpacked this magazine it was obvious I had some kind of special magazine in my hands. A small-size magazine, with semi-glossy paper that shoots the cover images in your face. The review copies are issues 8 and 9. And the cover images are just right in your face! Nailed to the ground you just want to keep staring at them, but curiosity wins and I start flipping the pages.
The biggest thumbs up for DieNacht magazine is that it has a very strong editorial content. The featured content is very well chosen and is intriguing, fascinating. Each item has a got the space in the magazine to be explain itself and be fully understood.

The graphic design and typography is well done, simple but effective. Not completely my cup of tea, but the projects and images are so strong that the design is just right. It supports images and text.

The magazine is written in German, but in the back are English translations of some main articles. Sometimes the accompanying texts are in English too, there's no clear line in that. Should be fun if the  magazine will be in English to get a wider audience which it deserves. For now, learn German or just be amazed by the good content of the magazines. You won;t see the famous artists but the ones that are making awesome work. Which is, in my opinion as we also do with O.K. Periodicals, the most interesting. You get in contact with people who still really want to rock the world.

Also nice to know is that DieNacht organizes photography exhibition.
Be sure to get a copy!

Little Magic Stories

Again something of pure awesomness on O.K. Periodicals blog today!
This is an interactive installation made by Chris O'Shea (formerly known as PixelSumo). Bringing the imagination of children to life through storytelling, performance and technology.

This installation aims to encourage children to use their creativity to bring stories to life. It helps to improve their confidence in self expression and develops literacy and speaking skills. The installation allows them to create a performance from within their imagination, on stage, in front of an audience of family and friends.

The use of technology literally brings their drawings to life on stage, allowing them to interact and respond to their creations in real time. By using a holographic projection film; sets, characters and objects appear to float on stage alongside the performers. A camera and custom software track the performers, allowing the scene to react in a playful & more dynamic way.

For children who show disinterest in writing stories and drawing, but love to play video games, this project hopes to inspire them to participate, creating their own immersive worlds that they can be proud to express their own creations through.
