Mac 'n' Cheese is an animated short directed and created by four students at the Utrecht School of Arts in the Netherlands. This roughly two minute animation took about five months to make, and about a bajillion peanut butter sandwiches.
Synopsis: When you find yourself running scared and running out of energy, there's only a few options left to outrun your opponent through the southern desert. Stopping at nothing, watch these two guys wear each other out and rip through boundaries hitherto unbroken. Enjoy the ride!
I stumbled upon the work of Pim Palsgraaf. He makes sculptures, paintings and drawings which are sometimes surreal, but very fascinating. Especially the taxidermy animals with found objects are very strange and intriguing.
The artists statement:
The studio of Pim Palsgraaf (1979) is located in the industrial section of Rotterdam.
His love-hate relationship to this environment is fundamental for his art work.
In the “Multiscape” sculptures he shows the outgrowths of urban architecture.
Comparable to tumours of urban growing he drapes found objects on taxidermy animals to symbolize the contrary of culture and nature.
The city seems to overcome the animal and to bring it to its knees. His paintings reveals us the clandestine interior of cities. Deserted rooms, damp corridors and ceilings in danger to collapse at any time show his weakness for urban decline, for the natural environment of men slowly sinking into oblivion.
Here a review of two new released dutch literary magazines. MAEB and kutgitaar (Translation: cuntguitar).
For MAEB, the magazine of Martijn Brugman, it's his fifth issue, he holds on to his goal and therefor the subscription to his beautiful and surprising magazine is still free. In all issues he writes short stories on one theme. For this issue he bundled letters, written by Freddie, to the famous dutch television host Matthijs van Nieuwkerk of the programme "De Wereld Draait Door". By reading the letters you get sucked in the live of Freddie and how he thinks and lives. Great work!
Kutgitaar is the first magazine of Dennis Gaens, a A6 format magazine which also works with themes this one is about Kutgitaar (Cuntguitar), and writters are asked to write story about this non existing object. The stories are nice and short, absurd, funny and weird. A nice little non-designed magazine that makes me very curious what the next magazine will be like...and offcourse what the next theme will be.

Sun Boxes are an environment to enter and exit at will. It’s comprised of twenty speakers operating independently, each powered by the sun via solar panels. There is a different loop set to play a guitar note in each box continuously. These guitar notes collectively make a Bb chord. Because the loops are different in length, once the piece begins they continually overlap and the piece slowly evolves over time.
The sounds of Sun Boxes have been described as both soothing and energizing. A unique combination of adjectives often used to describe yoga, or meditation. When experiencing the piece, Sun Boxes allows the participant to slow down, and notice the subtleties of the composition unfold. With the abundance of technology and hustle of this culture it is a much needed concept to not only be allowed, but also encouraged to slow down.

LUSTlab researches, generates hypotheses and makes unstable media stable again. According to LUSTlab, the future of digital media lies in the design of its use. Humanizing the unhuman, bringing the internet down to earth and finding the missing link between the digital and the physical. The outcomes vary from (strategic) visions to new communication tools, man-machine installations and physical products using digital content.
LUSTlab was founded by the Dutch Graphic Design Studio LUST in 2010.
The work of artist David Bowen is all about mechanical systems. The system showed in this post uses lasers to scan an union plant from one or three angles. As the plant is scanned a fuse deposition modeler in real-time creates a plastic model based on the information collected. The device repeats this process every 24 hours, scanning from a different angle. The result is a series of models illustrating the growth of a plant from varying angles.
Anne-Marie Geurink had just finished her study product design at the Art Academy of Arnhem. We visited the exhibition and were very impressed by her work. In search of new consumers she found a whole DIY healthcare world on the internet. Lots of youtube movies with instructions. She decided to design packages with specially designed instruments and materials to perform the explained procedures.
Some are nice, some are famous, some are dull, some are funny ans some you've seen to often already. And I can't read anything on this website. But plenty images for some good scrolling.

Pina is a tribute to German choreographer Pina Bausch, who died unexpectedly in the spring of 2009. It feels like both a dance film, a piece of fiction and a documentary at the same time. The dances express all kinds of emotion, from the depths of physical and mental pain to the most light-hearted moments of joy and humour. Visually, it is one of the most stunningly beautiful I have ever seen. Even if you're not especially into dance - I'm not -, I highly recommend that you go see it.
A-FACE-A-DAY is a very nice self initiated project by an Austrian art director/ illustrator based in VIENNA. After living in VIENNA (counting 1.7 million people) for more than 10 years, A-FACE-A-DAY decided that it is time to present the beauty of Viennese and Austrian human beings to the world.

Issue #6 of the It’s Nice That magazine includes interviews with George Lois, Asger Carlsen, Lawrence Weiner and Kate MacGarry as well as a conversation between Martino Gamper and Francis Upritchard. Issue #6 also includes features by Marion Deuchars, Mikey Please, Carl Kleiner, Nicholas Gottlund, David Bennewith, Toro Y Moi, Keith Haring and Shelagh Cluett as well as a selection of work recently featured online.
Hansje van Halem, a well known Dutch graphic designer has been running a home gallery called Schrank8. The project by itself is a great initiative but the posters she designed to promote this little home gallery are superb! Hansje says "I've made the posters into a typographic playfield. I like use the silk screen to print on textured materials". I think the images above say enough.

Graphic designer, photographer and artist Dorian Gourg chose the name Adahy for this project - the Cherokee word for Living in the Woods. It is the synthesis of two trips; one to New York City, one to South America. The geometric patterns in urban NYC reminded him of Native American art, which in turn reminded him of his trip to the south and quite controversely the wide open landscapes he saw there. As he puts it much more eloquently:
"...This serie of images contains and conveys the notion of time and aesthetic sense which are proper to a specific place throughout the ages, from its simplest mystic expression, to one of the most complex in applied arts, architecture."

"...It’s funny to think that mordern man reproduced what he destroyed in a «modern way», sometimes clearly on purpose, sometimes subconscously."

In the statement for her series "Experimental Relationship," Yijun Liao writes, "As a woman, I used to think I can only fall in love with someone that I adore, who is maturer than me, older than me, a protector, a mentor. Then I met my boyfriend, Moro, who is five years younger.... I have always doubted the stereotype of a man-woman relationship. Why does man have to be a certain way? Why should woman be a certain way?"
Only one of the images of Pixy's beautiful serie is featured in the last O.K. Periodicals magazine. In the Morning News is an interview and a more complete view on the serie "Experimental Relationship" I really love it!
Stephen Wragg was commissioned in 2004 to map and photograph the fast-expanding National Cycle Network for local Highways authorities in the UK.
He soon began to notice the variation in the white pedestrian symbols along the way. So began a seven-year odyssey to track down and document the Walking Men of Britain.

They claim it's the world's first mobile Augmented Reality Special Magazine Edition. And it might but what a fuss to get some special effects in a magazine or even...get the answers to the crossword puzzle. I'm convinced there is a nice printed way to do everything this AR app does and better. Nice moustache though.
I just love drawing machines...this is what Sandy Noble has to say about his machine. "This is what I'm calling this kind of drawing machine, that draws using a pen suspended from some cord. It uses a dual-polar coordinate system, so that's why I'm calling it a Polargraph, see."
Alex Trochut
I just got this book with the works of Alex Trochut.
Most portfolio books are just a showcase of projects. But this book has a very nice twist.
It is structured in four parts: The first part is the Introduction which puts Alex into context in the wider design world. The second part, Influences, explains where he gets his inspiration from. The third and biggest part shows a wide selection of projects he made. It varies between commercial works and personal projects. The last part is very nice. It reveals the design process. So how he came up with an idea, the early sketches and so on.
The first two parts are a good read. You will get to know Alex a little bit and has a sort of embedded art/design history lesson in it. The PROJECTS part is awesome. It shows a great variety of Alex's projects which are often a combination of illustration and typography. The personal projects stand out pretty well, which gives it a more personal touch.
That in combination with the last part, explaining how it is made, makes the content worthwhile to browse through. I really like looking and learning how he made certain illustrations, fro first struggles to the final result.
The book itself has a simple and elegant graphic design. The text pages are on different colored unocated paper in black and white. The Projects part is on glossy white paper and the Process pages are on uncoated white paper, both in full colour. It makes that each part of the book is really different.
Last but not least is the cover. In daylight it is fluorgreen. But it has a glow-in-the-dark print on it. In the dark it shows an ornamental pattern. In combination with only a small title in the upperleft corner it is really nice.
Overall, a very inspirational book for those who love typography and illustration.
I didn't know Alex Trochut before I got the book, but I like his work and while reading the texts it seems like a very charming, inspiring person!

Tadao Ando is one of the most inspiring architects. He has a way of playing with light, reflecting the surroundings in his buildings you can imagine. Unfortunately no website worth mentioning, but a quick search wil show you around his world.
Anne Knispel's graduation project Four legs good, two legs bad explores two interesting worlds by bringing them together in unexpected ways. In colorful, vibrant illustrations she connects human phobias with animals that have remarkable features or abilities that arm them against those very fears. Her imagination stretches yours as she protects the chiraptophobic (fearful of being touched) with a hedgehog's spikes and presents a marabou stork's throat sac as an ideal solution to chase away the enemies of those who are catagelophobic (fearful of being embarrassed).
Everybody knows that gangs reign in their own certain neighbourhood and that they will defend it with bloody battles. What I didn't know yet is that these gangs had their own business cards! At least they had them in the 70's - early 80's as these pictures show. Creative talents those dirty ol' bastards!
The people from Laan Labs recorded 3d data from the Kinect and played it back in augmented reality on the ipad using the String SDK.
A just for fun experiment but so very nice!

We had a super releaseparty of O.K. Periodicals #6 / BORING Issue. Jaap Blonk started the night with a soundpoetry performance. After that Joost and I went up the stage to give a very boring presentation. We explained how to fill in the form to become a subscriber (hello and thanks to al new subscribers!). And we made a slide for each and every single contributor in the magazine and thanking them. Well, you had to be there in the crowded venue.
But we finished with the flipthrough video you can see here as well.
We hope you will become a subscriber too, so we can make future issues of this wonderfull magazine. It has a limited run of copies (500) and we already sent 250 to pre-orders and so.
Issue 6 is, again, the best issue so far!
I've never been this much behind on schedule for reviewing magazines. But since I am and I have to review them because I promised…here two magazines in one review. The thing these magazine have in common is that they have the letters A I S T in their name.
First up is Stadtlich I reviewed it before and this is the second issue. This is the magazine that was born because we held a festival about magazine, yeah!! Nothing really changed in format or design but I still think it's a very nice mag. It's German and you can see it. The design is very solid just like the Germans like to make things. There is no way you can break this magazine. Ow…almost forgot to say that this issue has a beautiful photo serie about the Zoo. Want to read my first review go here.
Second is a magazine made in Arnhem..yes..in this small city we publish several magazines. You can say we are the magazine capital of the Netherlands ;) . This is a new design magazine which serves as a platform for creatives. A very nice initiative set up by three girls wanting to make a magazine. And if you want it you should do it. And they did. Flipping through the magazine first thing you notice are all the hand made DIY thingies that are in the magazine. Things like this always make you like the magazine more because you can feel how much work is put in to this. Second thing you is that it's a hard-core designed magazine. The designers really did everything they could to make a nice design which makes it look nice, but it also has a down side to it. In my opinion they tried a bit to hard. It's hard to understand and a bit too autonomous.
A fine first issue and I'm looking forward to seeing the next one having the subject "Money".
