The Art of Flight

My co-worker walked into the office with a copy of this HD movie the other day and I think we spent a good ten minutes watching it with jaws ajar before we remembered we had to get back to work. Pretty much everything about this snowboard movie is INSANE; the landscapes, the shots, but particularly the stunts (watching them I was feeling fake G-forces pulling on my stomach). No guts, no glory, I guess.

Watch the trailer here, but I definitely recommend you to watch the whole thing in HD on the biggest screen you can possibly find.

Cyriak's Amazing Video Blog

Cyriak is an animator working out of Brighton UK. The main reason I posted him here is because of his video's which I find awesome. Some are absolutely bizarre, and some just beautiful.

He recently received an EMA award for his music video for the band Eskmo.

A selection of his video's:

Ow and check out his website, you can find loads of very nice videos:

This is too cool! Walls layered with Red, Green and Blue images. Every time you change the light a new image comes up. A great way to show anatomy (as seen on the images) but I think it would also work really nicely in a bar, or a club. All in all a great idea worth a look.

Right now it's being printed in Arnhem (Netherlands) and a special insert is being made in China!! I won't reveal what it is, but it is THRILLING ofcourse!

The official release is on saturday November 26th. More info about the special evening and party very soon. Keep yourself updated via this website or via our facebook/twitter channels.

Face your Facebook

Recent graduate of the Design Academy in Eindhoven Charlotte Porskamp presented this film project at the Dutch Design Week a few days ago. Though many a person has pointed out the various cons of putting one's private life online via Facebook, Charlotte's 'Face your Facebook' is not one such wagging finger. In her film she does take the awkward, the narcistic and the inappropriate to the extreme, but in a lighthearted and witty way that brings a smile to my face.

Magazine Review: Elsie

A custom made cover, a handdrawn message inside, one copy in every 25 magazines has a golden envelope inside. And next to that a personal letter with your own word....with this word you've been asked to design a visual for the upcoming issue. All this made quite a impression on me a lot of work and a personal touch to connect with the reader that I haven't seen in a magazine before. Thumbs up for this.

The content of the magazine on the other hand is a hodge-podge. It's a theme based magazine but while reading the magazine I couldn't find the connection between all the written articles. The ideas behind the articles are good though.

The magazine is larger then A4 and has a colourful and clear style. All in all it's a fun to read and to look at magazine and as said before the personal touch is the strength of this magazine. For the second issue I hope the content and feel will be taken to a next level.

Stile Industria

Published as an offshoot of Gio Ponti’s (1891-1979) legendary Italian Architecture, Furnishing and Art magazine Domus (founded in 1928), Stile Industria was Italy’s first and only magazine exclusively dedicated to Industrial Design (disegno industriale), Graphic Art (grafica) and Packaging Design (imballagio). Launched in June 1954, under the directorship of architect and designer Alberto Rosselli (1921-1976), when the controversial idea of “Industrial Design” was very new and unconvincing to Italian readers, this quarterly magazine published a total of 41 issues (including one double issue - May 1960, No. 26/27) until it ceased publication nearly 10 years later in 1963. Stile Industria promoted design as one of the most important cultural forces in modern Italy and provided a platform for discussions about the aesthetic and meaning of modern design in an international context. The covers were designed by a who’s who of post-war Italian and international graphic designers and artists who gave them their unmistakable Italian appearance.

An interactive installation by James Alliban and Keiichi Matsuda

Commissioned by Alpha-ville for the 2011 festival, this interactive installation plays with and proposes alternative landscapes in the technological ether surrounding our everyday movements. As our identities become deliberately constructed and broadcast commodities, our projected personae increasingly enmesh and define us. Cell acts as a virtual mirror, displaying a constructed fictional persona in place of our physical form. Composed from keyword tags mined from online profiles, these second selves stalk our movements through space, building in size and density over time. The resulting forms are alternate, technologically refracted manifestations of the body, revealing the digital aura while simultaneously allowing us escape from our own constructed identities.

Drawing Daily by Steven Kraan

A while ago I 'discovered' the Drawing Daily made by Steven Kraan on Facebook. Each day he posts a very funny short comic. And by very funny I mean, very very very funny-utterly-hilarious comics. His sort of 'innocent child-like' point of view, together with the curious drawings makes it that you get a dive in his wonderful world. Don't be surprised if you come across Jesus dropping his keys in the water (while walking over it ofcourse), a staircase calling 911 to commit a accidental murder, a giant cockroach asking for love or astronauts escaping on a pool table because they didn't bought an escape pod.

This sweet little zine gets a smile on your face. So first thing to do is to like his facebook page. Second thing to do is to order this zine. Because you will need it!

PS: on the first page Steven draws an unique comic especially for you!

Etsuko Ichikawa - Into The Fire

The yin to Etsuko Ichikawa's soft-spoken, intro-spective yang is fiery, molten glass. Handling it while aglow at 2100°F, she loops, stretches and presses the smoking mass of lava atop paper to create abstract drawings known as pyrographs. Filmmaker Alistair Banks Griffin captures the dramatic choreography of Ichikawa's art in this short film for the Anthropologist.

Taman Sari Underground Mosque

During the mid-18th century, the Sultanate of Yogyakarta began work on Taman Sari Water Castle. Comprised of lavish gardens and pools, Taman Sari also featured a bizarre man-made sea, connected beneath the ground with underwater tunnels and small island buildings. One of these island structures was used as a mosque, and was only accessible by underwater passage.

The tiny mosque was only one story, and although basic, had all the necessary parts of a mosque including a mihrab, or small niche guiding worshippers toward Mecca. It also featured a series of staircases leading from the underwater entrances resembling MC Escher's relativity. Staircases lead up from five different doorways to a central platform and another staircase connects the five lower staircases to a higher doorway.

Brimming with mystery, the plain mosque is only one of the wonders of the entire Taman Sari Water Castle complex. Today, many of the remains of the great 17th century compound have been lost. Pools have been filled in, which allowed for the discovery of many of the underground structures, but have destroyed the pristine castle quality. Human settlements have taken the place of the man-made lake, and much of the other buildings left standing are worse for wear. In 1995, the entire complex was listed as a tentative World Heritage Site.

Logology 2

The subtitle of this book is 'The Wonderland of logo design'.
And I think that covers the subject quite well. It's a heavy book full of logos and casestudies of the designprocess behind it.

The book starts with two forewords (why not one?). A bit of graphic design bla bla with a general point of view why logos are necessary and why logo design still has an 'enormous' impact

The smallest, yet most interesting part of the book covers casestudies. It's nice to read and see how designers start the logo design process, what ideas they come up with for the assignment, and how they apply it on business cards, identity products, etc.

The largest part of the book is pages full of logos. The logos are categorized and the ones with similar characteristics are put together on a page. So you'll find logos with abstract mammals next to even more logos with abstract mammals. Which makes it funny to see that so much logos look a like. The stronger ones stand out with this way of indexing.

So overall, it's a nice flipthrough book if you're looking for inspiration when you have to make a logo or corporate identity!

The book is published and distributed (in Europe) by INDEX BOOK.

Portfolio Malene Hartman Rasmussen

The portoflio of Malene is so diverse and beautiful that it's a must on this blog.

"I am working with mixed media sculpture, making and arranging multiple components into complex narrative sceneries, the dialogue between components and the way one's unconscious can direct the composition interests me.

The intention is to impose personal feelings and stories onto container objects that traditionally have no feelings.
Initially the viewer may, mistakenly, be drawn to my figures thinking them to be toys; however closer examination reveals their rather darker narrative.
They invite you into an absurd and surreal world where things are not what they seem…

I want my work to look like a very skilled child could have made it, clumsy and elaborate at the same time.
My intention is to create compositions that have an underlying story and mood.
I hope the interpretation of my work isn´t too fixed; my intent is to make it open for the viewer to filter their own references through, to make sense and contribute to the story themselves.
My aim is to create a visual poetry based on my own personal story."

Corpus 2.1

For the series Corpus 2.1, Marcia Nolte was inspired by how modern technology
influences human behaviour.

Corpus 2.1 consists of four portraits and elaborates on Marcia Nolte’s earlier
released series Corpus 2.0. Whilst in Corpus 2.0 she only investigated how
technology may influence evolution, the new portraits now are a search for
how technology could be integrated in this evolution. The new portraits are
mainly focused close to the human skin. The skin which serves as both a barrier
and a link between the world inside and the world outside the human body.
