Osaka, Japan-based Nobuhiro Nakanishi’s mesmerizing body of work entitled Layered Drawings is truly breathtaking. He photographs a scene or object repeatedly over time, then laser prints each shot and mounts them onto acrylic. Change is captured in each frame, and once layered, they become sculpture installations. The overall effect shows movement and the subtle passage of time.

Yesterday was the opening of the exhibition for the Rotterdam Designprize. One of the nominees is: Matthijs Munnik with his Microscopic orchestra and he is one of my favorites.
By tracking the tiny worm the C elegans and translating their motion to sound Matthijs has made it possible to listen to a opera of different microscopic worms. A wonderful and magical project. Visiti his website for more information.
This is too cool! Walls layered with Red, Green and Blue images. Every time you change the light a new image comes up. A great way to show anatomy (as seen on the images) but I think it would also work really nicely in a bar, or a club. All in all a great idea worth a look.
Gamal Ez makes huge installations that touch you by being very intimate and touching. An artist that is from origin Egyptian, but working and living in the Netherlands. His work "Tsunami" in the atrium of the city hall in The Hague I found really impressive. I bet there's much more to come!
Published as an offshoot of Gio Ponti’s (1891-1979) legendary Italian Architecture, Furnishing and Art magazine Domus (founded in 1928), Stile Industria was Italy’s first and only magazine exclusively dedicated to Industrial Design (disegno industriale), Graphic Art (grafica) and Packaging Design (imballagio). Launched in June 1954, under the directorship of architect and designer Alberto Rosselli (1921-1976), when the controversial idea of “Industrial Design” was very new and unconvincing to Italian readers, this quarterly magazine published a total of 41 issues (including one double issue - May 1960, No. 26/27) until it ceased publication nearly 10 years later in 1963. Stile Industria promoted design as one of the most important cultural forces in modern Italy and provided a platform for discussions about the aesthetic and meaning of modern design in an international context. The covers were designed by a who’s who of post-war Italian and international graphic designers and artists who gave them their unmistakable Italian appearance.

Students from Kyoto Seika University made posters for this 'No Nukes' initiative. Some of 'em are better than others, but on the overall it's a great collection with a lot of (natural!) energy! Check it out here: nonukeart.org
Also, I really like the logo...
Found via Kyoto Journal.
Check out this very nice draw-it-yourself-with-a-balloon installation by Karina Smigla-Bobinski!
Folkert de Jong is a dutch artist who makes the most beautiful artworks using styrofoam and polyurethane. Can be seen at the Saatchi gallery for now. And had a big exhibition in the Groninger Museum last year. Very impressive and innovative. The beautiful colours and harsh subjects make it all the more interesting.

Luzinterruptus (Latin for 'interrupted light') is a Spanish art collective that makes eerily beautiful light installations. For their most recent work 'Under nuclear threat' they made an army of scarecrow-like nuclear figures. Their ghostly appearance, a threatening death march upon their surroundings, appeals to the modern fear of what events such as occurred in Japan might do to our world.

Starting on the 14th of september there's an exhibition on Walter van Beirendonck in the MoMu (Antwerp). An incredible designer with a well deserved repuation. Go and enjoy!

Regarded as one of the leading designers of the twentieth century, Crouwel embraced a new modernity to produce typographic designs that captured the essence of the emerging computer and space age of the early 1960s.
Spanning over 60 years, the exhibition covered Crouwel’s rigorous design approach and key moments in his career including his work for design practice Total Design, the identity for the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, as well as his iconic poster, print, typography and lesser known exhibition design. The exhibition explored Crouwel’s innovative use of grid-based layouts and typographic systems to produce consistently striking asymmetric visuals.
Not only for graphic designers, I think this exhibition will be really worth checking out!
Also, on the 1st of September there's an Items Live lecture where designers as Experimental Jetset, Na Kim, Hugues Boekraad and Thonik discuss Crouwel's work and influence. And then the next day go see Crouwel himself at Now We Are Talking festival in The Hague.
A book filled with "olifantenpaadjes" (translates into elephantpaths). Photo's by Jan-Dirk on which you can see the small pathways created by shortcuts people make. No matter how well streets and pavements are thought out, there is always a minor detour to avoid. One of the most innocent forms of civil disobedience, which results in a really nice photobook.
Anne-Marie Geurink had just finished her study product design at the Art Academy of Arnhem. We visited the exhibition and were very impressed by her work. In search of new consumers she found a whole DIY healthcare world on the internet. Lots of youtube movies with instructions. She decided to design packages with specially designed instruments and materials to perform the explained procedures.
Watch this presentation at poptech and find out what great work the Australian choreograhper and director Gideon Obarzanek is making. I really love how he works with new interactive techniques and dance. Won't say more, just watch the video.
Tadao Ando is one of the most inspiring architects. He has a way of playing with light, reflecting the surroundings in his buildings you can imagine. Unfortunately no website worth mentioning, but a quick search wil show you around his world.
Check out the nice portfolio of HORT, a graphic design studio based in Berlin: Great work, very playful. For anyone on early holiday in Barcelona: go check their solo exhibition at the Vallery Gallery over there, from 9 till 31th of June.
The fourth edition of Arnhem Mode Biennale is named Amber and from 1 June until 3 July we are in search of her true identity.
Arnhem Mode Biennale is one of the biggest events in Arnhem and this year again we can't go around it. I went to the main exhibition this saturday. And was impressed by the exhibtion-design itself. The black walls and guiding line through the complete exhibition was very nice to see. I wasn't really suprised by the work though, but I liked that it was more than fashion. Offcourse there where some nice things there was a room full of great photographs selected by Capricous magazine http://becapricious.com/ this magazine was also shown in our own O.K. Festival Magazine expo. And offcourse a beautifull dress made by Iris van Herpen.
As a conclusion I must say I liked the exhibition in general. Some nice things, nice exhibition design in a very nice building. The entrance price is a bit to high for what you get (but you get the catalog for free) and you can skip the bookshop. But if you are in Arnhem or planning to go there please go here it's you'll have a good time.

The website of some very cool exhibition designers, website looks a little odd, but there work is great, for example these images of the Loki Schmidt Haus. Also check out their design for the State Museum of Textile and Industry, Augsburg, quite nice.

A virtual tour through the new Noord-Brabants museum (regional museum) and the new Stedelijk Museum (contemporary art / city museum), completely build in sketch-up, making it possible to do a complete walk through the museum in Google! I think that's quite amazing.

Jeroen Holthuis and myself have been in contact since we featured his work in the second O.K. Periodicals; the FAILURE issue (click ISSUES on the right for a preview). We featured his Bitquid installation in this issue which I think is very very very, VERY, awesome!
Recently he has been working to transform the beautifull glitchy images into silkscreen prints. Which, as you can see, did work out very fine.
He told me there are a limited amount of copies available for purchase. I'd say: get one!
As a reminder also the previously featured video of the Bitquid installation.
A (new?) website showing posters in the streets of Amsterdam (the Netherlands). A wonderful collection with good and bad ones. They also started doing interviews with the designers of the posters, one of the first is Michiel Schuurman. He makes awesome poster-designs.
A few weeks ago I visited a lecture by mr. van den Hoed about his work and specifically his latest project, in which he set out on a quest to reproduce certain stills from the film Lost in Translation, sans characters. Yet van den Hoed never makes a traditional photo (if there is indeed such a thing as the traditional photo); one work is a composition of hundreds if not thousands of tiny photos from different times of day and different lighting situations, edited into an essentially timeless piece. The final image represents a moment that was never really there, a kind of vacuum in time and space in which the heart of the city of Tokyo resides. The story of his quest is almost as interesting as the work itself, but is too long to be told here - and he tells it better anyway. If you can, I highly recommend you check out his current exhibition.
Turn your speakers up! ;)
This is an excerpt from a performance made in part to demonstrate the effect of noise pollution from opencast mining and in part to demonstrate the art heritage of the Vevring community which is about to be destroyed by the mining project (www.bygdasframtid.com). The instruments are part of "Desibel", an exhibit made for the 30th anniversary of the Vevring Art Exhibition (www.vevringutstillinga.no), created by Geir Hjetland. The composition is by Maia Ratkje.
On my I-wish-I'll-see-this-list for the summer: Leviathan by Anish Kap oor in Grand Palais, Paris. This enormous space made from inflated PVC is dedicated to missing artist Ai Wei Wei. Kapoor calls for a worldwide day of action where museums and galleries close for one day in sympathy with Wei Wei.
When the O.K. Festival exhibition was finished we didn't quite know what to do with all the polystyrene packaging pieces which were used to showcase all the magazines. Maybe we should have heard of Michael A. Salter back than and donate everything to him, so he could make an amazing artwork from it!
Have a look what he does with leftover packaging!
Ron Mandos Amsterdam is excited to announce the latest solo exhibition of Levi van Veluw. We warmly welcome you to join us at the opening reception of this eagerly anticipated show on Saturday the 21st of May from 5 to 7 pm, at which the artist
will be present.
Levi van Veluw will showcase new work from a series of new installations, photographs and videos in which he draws from his own childhood memories to thematically and narratively develop his own brand of self-portraiture.
The artist has created 3 “rooms” covered with more then 30.000 wooden blocks, balls and slats respectively. Each “room” is executed as a life-size installation (4m x 2.5m x 2.5m) and will be presented at the gallery together with photographs and videos.
Portrayed in one piece is a desk, a table lamp, a bookcase. The edge of the table is burned by Levi van Veluw as he had an obsession for fire. All of these objects including every inch of the floor, walls and ceiling is covered in the same material: 14.000 16 cm2 dark brown wooden blocks. The blocks are made by the artist and glued on the wall one by one. The works suggest a narrative world behind the abstract portraits.
