NOBUHIRO NAKANISHI

Osaka, Japan-based Nobuhiro Nakanishi’s mesmerizing body of work entitled Layered Drawings is truly breathtaking. He photographs a scene or object repeatedly over time, then laser prints each shot and mounts them onto acrylic. Change is captured in each frame, and once layered, they become sculpture installations. The overall effect shows movement and the subtle passage of time.

Microscopic Opera by Matthijs Munnik

Yesterday was the opening of the exhibition for the Rotterdam Designprize. One of the nominees is: Matthijs Munnik with his Microscopic orchestra and he is one of my favorites.
By tracking the tiny worm the C elegans and translating their motion to sound Matthijs has made it possible to listen to a opera of different microscopic worms. A wonderful and magical project. Visiti his website for more information.

Really Cool RGB Walls

This is too cool! Walls layered with Red, Green and Blue images. Every time you change the light a new image comes up. A great way to show anatomy (as seen on the images) but I think it would also work really nicely in a bar, or a club. All in all a great idea worth a look.

Stile Industria

Published as an offshoot of Gio Ponti’s (1891-1979) legendary Italian Architecture, Furnishing and Art magazine Domus (founded in 1928), Stile Industria was Italy’s first and only magazine exclusively dedicated to Industrial Design (disegno industriale), Graphic Art (grafica) and Packaging Design (imballagio). Launched in June 1954, under the directorship of architect and designer Alberto Rosselli (1921-1976), when the controversial idea of “Industrial Design” was very new and unconvincing to Italian readers, this quarterly magazine published a total of 41 issues (including one double issue - May 1960, No. 26/27) until it ceased publication nearly 10 years later in 1963. Stile Industria promoted design as one of the most important cultural forces in modern Italy and provided a platform for discussions about the aesthetic and meaning of modern design in an international context. The covers were designed by a who’s who of post-war Italian and international graphic designers and artists who gave them their unmistakable Italian appearance.

Nuclear Danger?

Luzinterruptus (Latin for 'interrupted light') is a Spanish art collective that makes eerily beautiful light installations. For their most recent work 'Under nuclear threat' they made an army of scarecrow-like nuclear figures. Their ghostly appearance, a threatening death march upon their surroundings, appeals to the modern fear of what events such as occurred in Japan might do to our world.

De lezing wordt afgesloten met een rondleiding over de tentoonstelling.
Locatie Showroom Arnhem, Langstraat 20, ingang Kleine Oord

Wim Crouwel Exhibition + Lecture at Stedelijk Museum!

From the 13th of August in Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam: Wim Crouwel, A Graphic Odyssey

Regarded as one of the leading designers of the twentieth century, Crouwel embraced a new modernity to produce typographic designs that captured the essence of the emerging computer and space age of the early 1960s.

Spanning over 60 years, the exhibition covered Crouwel’s rigorous design approach and key moments in his career including his work for design practice Total Design, the identity for the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, as well as his iconic poster, print, typography and lesser known exhibition design. The exhibition explored Crouwel’s innovative use of grid-based layouts and typographic systems to produce consistently striking asymmetric visuals.

Not only for graphic designers, I think this exhibition will be really worth checking out!

Also, on the 1st of September there's an Items Live lecture where designers as Experimental Jetset, Na Kim, Hugues Boekraad and Thonik discuss Crouwel's work and influence. And then the next day go see Crouwel himself at Now We Are Talking festival in The Hague.

A book filled with "olifantenpaadjes" (translates into elephantpaths). Photo's by Jan-Dirk  on which you can see the small pathways created by shortcuts people make. Amber: Arnhem Mode Biennale, More and Fashion.

The fourth edition of Arnhem Mode Biennale is named Amber and from 1 June until 3 July we are in search of her true identity.

Arnhem Mode Biennale is one of the biggest events in Arnhem and this year again we can't go around it. I went to the main exhibition this saturday. And was impressed by the exhibtion-design itself. The black walls and guiding line through the complete exhibition was very nice to see. I wasn't really suprised by the work though, but I liked that it was more than fashion. Offcourse there where some nice things there was a room full of great photographs selected by Capricous magazine http://becapricious.com/ this magazine was also shown in our own O.K. Festival Magazine expo. And offcourse a beautifull dress made by Iris van Herpen.

As a conclusion I must say I liked the exhibition in general. Some nice things, nice exhibition design in a very nice building. The entrance price is a bit to high  for what you get (but you get the catalog for free) and you can skip the bookshop. But if you are in Arnhem or planning to go there please go here it's you'll have a good time.

Jeroen Holthuis and myself have been in contact since we featured his work in the second O.K. Periodicals; the FAILURE issue (click ISSUES on the right for a preview). We featured his Bitquid installation in this issue which I think is very very very, VERY, awesome!
Recently he has been working to transform the beautifull glitchy images into silkscreen prints. Which, as you can see, did work out very fine.
He told me there are a limited amount of copies available for purchase. I'd say: get one!

As a reminder also the previously featured video of the Bitquid installation.

Willem van den Hoed

A few weeks ago I visited a lecture by mr. van den Hoed about his work and specifically his latest project, in which he set out on a quest to reproduce certain stills from the film Lost in Translation, sans characters. Yet van den Hoed never makes a traditional photo (if there is indeed such a thing as the traditional photo); one work is a composition of hundreds if not thousands of tiny photos from different times of day and different lighting situations, edited into an essentially timeless piece. The final image represents a moment that was never really there, a kind of vacuum in time and space in which the heart of the city of Tokyo resides. The story of his quest is almost as interesting as the work itself, but is too long to be told here - and he tells it better anyway. If you can, I highly recommend you check out his current exhibition.

Origin of the Beginning

Ron Mandos Amsterdam is excited to announce the latest solo exhibition of Levi van Veluw. We warmly welcome you to join us at the opening reception of this eagerly anticipated show on Saturday the 21st of May from 5 to 7 pm, at which the artist
will be present.

Levi van Veluw will showcase new work from a series of new installations, photographs and videos in which he draws from his own childhood memories to thematically and narratively develop his own brand of self-portraiture.

The artist has created 3 “rooms” covered with more then 30.000 wooden blocks, balls and slats respectively. Each “room” is executed as a life-size installation (4m x 2.5m x 2.5m) and will be presented at the gallery together with photographs and videos.

Portrayed in one piece is a desk, a table lamp, a bookcase. The edge of the table is burned by Levi van Veluw as he had an obsession for fire. All of these objects including every inch of the floor, walls and ceiling is covered in the same material: 14.000 16 cm2 dark brown wooden blocks. The blocks are made by the artist and glued on the wall one by one. The works suggest a narrative world behind the abstract portraits.
